What on EARTH Has Happened
to the Pacific Northwest?

PACIFIC NW GEOLOGY GeoMap, Side One, © 1998, 2002,  by Cynthia Shaw

PACIFIC NORTHWEST GEOLOGY GeoMap. Revised November 2002 to include the hydrothermal vents of the Juan de Fuca Ridge, and to take advantage of recent bathymetric imagery for the Explorer oceanic plate.

Use the most geologically fabulous region of the United States to relate landforms to their underlying tectonic processes...a perfect complement to any earth science curriculum! Highly acclaimed by geologists who have called it the best visual representation of "state-of-the-art Pacific NW geology" currently in existence, our GeoMap has drawn rave reviews from educators at NSTA conventions, and natural history buffs have been equally enthusiastic. A three-dimensional slice through the Washington State picks up the major points of geologic interest and presents them in an overall perspective. Side One relates familiar landforms to their underlying tectonic processes, while Side Two presents a closer view of more recent topside events that have shaped the landscape. Designed and illustrated by Cynthia Shaw in consultation with WA State Geologist Ray Lasmanis, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (Battelle) geologist Stephen Reidel, and marine geologist Veronique Robigou of the University of Washington School of Oceanography, the GeoMap is chock full of detail and information, representing geological processes as they apply to the Pacific Northwest. The main body of text describing the geologic history of the Northwest is written by Dr. Reidel.

At 15"x24", the map size is ideal for use at home on the table, in the car on field trips, or in the classroom by teams of two-students. Some educators prefer two posters for display, in order to show both sides at once. Printed in full color on durable poster stock. Lamination is suggested for heavy use. (Scroll down to see Side Two.)

GEO-MAPS: $9.95 for one, $8.45 each for two, $7.45 each for three to 14 geo-maps, $5.95 each when purchased in classroom sets of 15 or more.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST GEOLOGY custom enlargements are available for schools or other educational/museum displays. Cost is figured in price per square foot, and varies according to printing process, mounting, and laminating options. Call for quote.

Ice Age Floods Video

In a geologic heartbeat, cataclysmic floods containing ten times the flow of all the world’s rivers thundered across the Pacific Northwest and changed the landscape of Oregon and Washington some 17,000 years ago, sending fertile eastern Washington soil down the Columbia River and into the Willamette Valley of Oregon. This video tells the story of the changes to the lower Columbia River channel and Oregon. Includes animations of the floods, such as Portland, Oregon, under 400 feet of water and other grand views of the area. 28 min.

A powerful example of how major scientific theories have been challenged - and changed, with the emergence of new and compelling evidence - and how scientists are often not in agreement in their interpretations of that evidence.

Fire, Faults and Floods: A Road and Trail Guide to Exploring the Origins of the Columbia River Basin. By Marge and Ted Mueller, published by the University of Idaho press. A guide to finding the region’s major geologic features and understanding the geological events and forces that created them. The authors take the reader from Missoula, Montana and the lower Clark Fork River drainage, all the way through the Columbia Basin and Columbia Gorge to the Oregon Coast, to sites that are easily accessible by car or a short hike. An excellent resource for planning class field trips, or for just getting out to see for themselves the truly spectacular geologic features. Goes into much more depth on the region than the popular Roadside Geology series. Soft bound, 288 pages, with lots of photos and illustrations.
